Setting up your SmartyCam is straightforward, and this quick guide will walk you through each step; highlighting the small differences between our models to make sure you're fully prepared for your next session.
Step 1: Insert and Initialise Your SD Card
Start by inserting a formatted microSD card into your SmartyCam with the power off. Once the device is turned on, it will automatically initialise the card and display “SD Card Ready” on screen. This confirms the system is paired and is ready for setup.
Tip: For optimal recording - especially on GP and Dual models - use a high-speed U3-rated SD card.
Please note that the camera MUST be externally powered as the internal battery is only competent for initial configuration
Step 2: Open Race Studio 3
Next, insert the SD card into your PC and open Race Studio 3. Your device will appear under the connected hardware list - labelled according to the model you own (e.g. SmartyCam 3 Corsa). From here, you’ll be able to carry out three key tasks:
- Update the firmware
- Load your track layouts
- Configure your video overlay and data streams
Firmware and Track Setup
Check the Firmware tab in Race Studio 3. If an update is available, select “Update Device” and Race Studio will copy the latest firmware onto your SD card. The camera will then install this automatically once the card is reinserted.
To add tracks, use the Track Manager to find your circuit, such as Silverstone or Donington Park, and drag it onto your SD card. This is particularly useful for Sport and Dual users who may be running the camera in standalone GPS mode.
Overlay & Data Stream Configuration
From the “All Configurations” view, click New and select your SmartyCam model. You’ll be asked whether the device is running Connected to Master (e.g. a logger or dash) or as Standalone (using GPS only).
Here’s what to note for each model:
- Sport: Supports both standalone and connected modes. It’s the most flexible for club-level setups.
- GP: Similar to Sport but offers HD recording and interchangeable lens options for improved footage.
- Corsa: Requires connection to a master device. There is no standalone mode, making it ideal for integrated, professional setups.
- Dual: Uses two cameras and combines the feeds into one video. You’ll configure each view separately and then manage the overlay across both.
In the overlay editor, you can reposition display elements like RPM, speed, gear, lap times, and predictive delta. You can also add custom elements such as team logos, throttle position bars, or engine temperature, all from the available CAN data stream.
When you're finished, click Save, then make sure to click Transmit to send the configuration to your SD card.
Final Installation on the Camera
With your SD card fully prepared, reinsert it into your camera and power it on. Navigate to the Update menu and apply any available:
- Firmware updates
- Configurations
- Track data
Each section will guide you through the update process.
Final Device Settings
Check your camera’s internal settings. We recommend:
- Setting the correct system time for session accuracy
- Choosing your exposure mode (spot or full-frame)
- Enabling “Flip” if your camera is mounted upside down
These small tweaks ensure your video and data align correctly during post-session analysis.
